Study on the interaction between a projectile and the barrel

Résumé

Most standard ammunition begin its interior ballistics cycle in the barrel at the forcing cone, thus with a low velocity (a few m/s at most). However, it is not the case for some technologies such as telescoped ammunition (projectile entirely housed in the cartridge). In that case, the projectile begins its interior ballistics (IB) cycle inside the cartridge, arriving at the forcing cone with a non-negligible velocity (several hundreds of m/s). This specificity is not considered in classical interior ballistics models. The ensuing impact has then been studied analytically with two approaches (monodimensionnal shock wave and static engraving considerations), to propose a simple modification of the classical IB equations. Numerical simulations have also been conducted with a finite element software (ABAQUS) to study the influence of the friction coefficient on the velocity of a projectile impacting a forcing cone. The results show trends in agreement with experimental results.
